OUR HISTORY
1965
In 1965, a group of local residents came together with a shared mission: protecting their neighbors and their community. From their commitment to service, the Albany Volunteer Fire Department was born, laying the foundation for a lasting tradition of volunteerism and community protection.
The department’s original officers were President Steve Ivanyisky, Vice President Ted Stilley, Secretary-Treasurer Joseph P. Kreko, Recording Secretary Gerald Stilley, Sergeant-at-Arms Raymond Bankston, and Fire Chief Paul F. Farkas. The original Board of Directors consisted of Zeke Daniels, Paul F. Farkas, Ted Stilley, Steve Ivanyisky, Joseph P. Kreko, Raymond Bankston, and S. D. Kinchen.
What began as a small group of dedicated neighbors grew into a lasting part of Albany’s history, carrying forward a legacy of service, teamwork, and neighbors helping neighbors.
1997
A New Chapter
On January 25, 1997, the Albany Volunteer Fire Department officially merged into Livingston Parish Fire Protection District No. 1.
The merger integrated the department into Livingston Parish Fire Protection District, expanding its organizational framework while preserving the tradition of volunteer service that has defined Albany since its earliest days.
The name and organization evolved. The mission remained the same.
1992
Growing With the Community
As Albany and the surrounding area continued to grow, so did the need for organized fire protection.
In 1992, the Albany Volunteer Fire Department began providing fire protection under an agreement with Livingston Parish Fire Protection District No. 1. The partnership marked an important step in the department's evolution and its ability to serve the broader community.
It was another chapter in a story that had started nearly three decades earlier.
Today
Built on Tradition. Ready for Tomorrow.
Over the decades, the department has grown alongside the Albany community, providing fire protection both within the city limits of Albany and throughout the surrounding fire district. From local neighborhoods and businesses to the rural areas beyond town, our volunteers stand ready to respond wherever they are needed.
Firefighting has evolved with new equipment, technology, training, and capabilities—but the commitment to serving our neighbors has never changed.
Today, Albany’s firefighters continue to build on the foundation laid by those who came before them, carrying a proud tradition of volunteer service into the future.
